Tabla master Zakir Hussain was laid to rest in San Francisco on Thursday. Hussein, one of the world’s most accomplished percussionists, died Monday at a San Francisco hospital from complications caused by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease. He is 73 years old.
The son of legendary tabla player Alla Rakha, Hussain revolutionized the instrument, taking it beyond the boundaries of classical music and into other forms, including jazz and Western classical music.
The renowned musician is one of India’s most celebrated musicians and has won four Grammy Awards in his 60-year career, including three at the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year. Awards.
Hussein is survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola, daughters Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi, his brothers Taufiq Qureshi and Fazal Qureshi and his sister Khurshid Aulia.
