TOROONTO (AP) – Former central banker Mark Carney will become Canada’s next prime minister after the Liberals voted on a landslide.
Carney is 59 years old. He was born on March 16, 1965 in Fort Smith, Northwest, and grew up in Edmonton, Alberta.

Carney operated a Canadian Bank from 2008 to 2013 and from 2013 to 2020. After helping Canada manage the biggest impact of the 2008 financial crisis, he was recruited to become the first non-courage to run a Bank of England since its founding in 1694.
In 2020, he began serving as the UN’s Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance.
Carney is a former executive at Goldman Sachs. He worked in London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto for 13 years before being appointed as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003. He has no political experience.

Carney received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University in 1988 and a master’s and doctoral degree from Oxford University. Like many Canadians, he played hockey and was a Harvard goalkeeper.

His chances of being prime minister for more than a few weeks seem to be improving. In the mid-January poll by Nanos, liberals lag behind opposition conservatives and their leader Pierre Poilievre 47% to 20%. This week, the latest polls were 34% for liberals and 37% for Conservatives.
