Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set an ambitious goal on Thursday to win 215 seats in the 2026 election and claimed her party, Trinamool Congress (TMC), will ensure the BJP statistics are reduced. BJP holds 77 seats in the 2021 parliamentary elections.
“In the next Bangladesh parliamentary poll, we will win 215 seats of 294 seats and ensure the BJP numbers drop further,” Banerjee said of a party meeting. TMC Apremo digs on the BJP, recalling the saffron party’s slogans in past elections.
“In the 2021 parliamentary poll, BJP leaders said ‘200 paar’ but were defeated. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, they claimed “400 PAAR” but they couldn’t even get a majority. Abhishek (Banerjee) said absolutely right. We will get a two-thirds majority, but you have to ensure a bigger victory. This time, BJP nominees have to lose their deposits,” she said.
TMC State Secretary General Abhishek Banerjee responded to Mamata Banerjee’s views and called on party workers to ensure a decisive victory over the party. “The struggle to ensure the future of Bangladesh has begun. We must ensure the victory of TMC and make Mamata Banerjee the fourth consecutive time as Chief Minister. Our goal is to win a two-thirds majority in the 2026 parliamentary elections,” he said.
The ruling’s TMC won 213 seats in a parliamentary poll in 2021, earning a comfortable majority, while the BJP managed to secure 77 seats. As the 2026 General Assembly elections approach, the TMC focuses on solidifying its support base and opposing the BJP’s challenges in the state.
