A female BJP supporter claimed she was raped by a village chief and his aides in the Trinam Congress office in the Simid Napal area. However, the two were accused of filing a counter-claim against the woman, and a political dispute broke out between West Bengal’s ruling party and opposition figures.
The woman said in a complaint that she and her husband were targeted by Narayanganj village chief Lakshmi Sheet and Trinamool-run Panchayat.
The husband claimed his wife was called to the party office on Sunday, where she was raped by Sheet and his assistant.
Meanwhile, Sheet denied the allegations “politically motivated”, saying he was hecked and composed by the BJP.
Although Lakshmi denied all the charges against him and raised another charge that he was hecked and framed by the BJP.
Police have begun an investigation into the matter, based on the woman’s complaint and counter-claims on the form.
Trinamool Regional President Sujay Hazra said in a statement that the party does not tolerate disrespect for women.
He added: “If there is any evidence that what the woman claims to be true, then Trinamool will take strict action on the Lakshmi table and the police can take legal lessons.”
However, the BJP accused the Siminapol police of negligence, saying that the investigation was initiated only after party workers began protesting.
In response to the alleged incident, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul claimed that the Trinamool office had become a “rape center” and said that once the local exams were concluded, protests would be held outside the Sheriff’s Office in the West Midnapal District.
