Survivors of the devastating landslide in Wayanad on Wednesday staged a protest in front of the district collector under the auspices of the Janasabdham Karma Samithi to express dissatisfaction over what they alleged was the apathy of the state and federal governments in implementing many measures. – Required rehabilitation programs.

The protests highlighted a series of urgent demands to speed up the recovery of survivors in the worst-hit areas, including Punchirimattom, Mundakkai and Chooralmala.

Naseer Alakkal, chairman of the committee, accused authorities at the start of the protests of using covert tactics to limit the number of families eligible for relocation, effectively abandoning families in Chooralmala and Mundakkai.

He said the land plots identified by the government for proposed permanent resettlement projects near Nidubara and Kalpetta were mired in legal disputes.

Legal challenges have jeopardized resettlement plans, highlighting the need to identify uncontested land to relocate survivors promptly. He said as many as 131 survivors were yet to receive the emergency assistance promised by the chief minister.

Protesters reiterated several key demands, including withdrawing proposals to reduce the number of families needing to be resettled and guaranteeing that all eligible families benefit from the resettlement program.

Their other demands include ensuring emergency assistance and daily wage support to all affected families, publishing the list of dead or missing persons, and waiving loans for residents of Meppadi panchayat sectors 10, 11 and 12. They called for the resumption of searches for missing persons in disaster areas and for property owners in disaster-stricken areas to be declared as affected individuals entitled to assistance.
