A quiet Sydney street was thrown into chaos on Friday after residents said a burst water pipe sent a stream of water rushing through their windows.
Sydney Water said network technicians were assessing whether there was a leak after a main burst occurred at Binya Place in the city’s southern suburbs of Como on Friday afternoon.
NSW Fire and Rescue Service Superintendent Adam Dewberry said four or five homes were affected after a “large water main burst”.
New South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the damage was extensive.
Resident Amara Nanra, 26, said she was sitting at home when she heard a loud crash and a wave of water rushing into the area below her home.
“It just comes in through the window,” she said.
She said she rushed downstairs but was unable to get close to the water as it poured from the window.
“It almost got worse…the house downstairs was flooded all the time.
“I’m just worried about my house… there’s water splashing everywhere,” she said.
She said the floors downstairs collapsed, shards of glass were everywhere and the furniture was soaked.
After the explosion, residents of the affected houses moved their belongings to dry in front of their homes, and some people were still without power.
Ausgrid representatives at the scene said it could take some time to restore power.
“Everyone will be temporarily without power,” the representative said.
“They have to have their electrician come in and test all the circuits inside to make sure there’s no water damage inside. Once they can prove that all the circuits inside are OK, they can get power back on.
Sydney Water said crews had isolated the main pipe and repairs were ongoing.
“Customer advocates are on site working with affected customers and assessing damages.”
The pipeline connects to Woronora Dam and supplies water to Sutherland, Cronulla, Engadine, Heathcote, Helensburgh and Stanwell Park.
