Israel announced on Thursday that it had successfully killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the main conspirator of the October 7, 2023 attacks on the country. His remains were discovered in the rubble of Gaza by Israeli troops during a clash in Rafah. Authorities confirmed his identity through DNA testing, dental records and fingerprints. Israeli military officials reported that a bulletproof vest, grenades and 40,000 shekels were found when Sinwar’s body was found.
Video released by the Israeli military shows the final moments of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, captured by a drone surveying the area. In the video, a visibly injured Shinwar can be seen desperately trying to avoid detection by throwing a piece of wood at the drone. Soon after, another attack hit the building, causing it to collapse and Sinwar and two other militants were killed.

Yahya Sinwar, the longtime leader of Hamas, is known for his strict discipline and authoritarian style, according to the Press Trust of India. Born in a Gaza refugee camp in 1962, Sinwar has been involved with Hamas from the beginning, leading its security forces and hunting down informants working for Israel. Sinwar’s role in the Oct. 7 attack that killed more than 1,200 people and led to the kidnapping of some 250 Israelis put him high on Israel’s most wanted list.
