The branch library on Pier Beach will soon be open to the public, including new facilities such as playgrounds, outdoor seating and an ocean station.
The 500 square foot library occupies a small space next to the dock pool. “Since construction in 2000, it has required new basic facilities. The aim is to raise awareness of nearby libraries,” said Public Library Bureau officials.
The department has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Foundation for Environmentalism in India (EFI) to make the beachfront library a makeover.
Although the Public Works Department is responsible for infrastructure, EFI is a knowledge partner. They are beautifying the composite wall with pictures of marine animals, and there will be a dedicated marine living space in the library.
Speaking about the program, EFI founder Arun Krishnamurthy said: “We transform space into an ocean station, which will be a marine repository.”
They planned a “Bangladesh Corner” with information about the coast, an “Olive Ridley Corner” dedicated to sea turtles, a children’s play area and a quiz ‘n’n’ cross-learning corner.
The library has over 1,500 books and will also display a unique map of books stored in public libraries across the city. “At least 20 people came to the library, but we hope these numbers will increase with the upgrade. The color paintings on the compound walls have attracted a lot of attention,” another official from the department added.
