A 65-year-old man and his son were arrested on Saturday for beating up a thief who was trying to break into a house in Parameswaramangalam village near Alakonam town in Ranipet district.
The arrested persons were identified as S. Vedachalam, an agricultural worker, and his son V. Udayakumar (36), an autorickshaw driver. Vedachalam lives with his wife V. Bhama (58), two sons and their families. The deceased was identified as K. Madesh (24), a local of Arigilapadi village near Arakkonam town.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Madhesh, who had been living with his parents in Awadi near Chennai for the past two years, came to his native village Ajrapadi on Saturday to meet his childhood friends. Madhesh and his friends were wandering around a neighboring village when they saw the door of Vedacharam’s house in the village open and a family sleeping on the balcony and living room of the house.
Madheshi quietly entered the house. When Madhesh opened a few cupboards in the house, Vidacharam’s daughter-in-law U. Dhakshayani (29) noticed him. She immediately called the police. Family members and neighbors caught Madhesh and tied him to a balcony pillar. They also allegedly beat him. The incident occurred around 3 a.m.
Acting on an alert from residents, Thakkolam police rescued Madhesh from the spot. The police rushed Madhesh to the Taluk Government Hospital in Alakonam town, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Thakkolam police have registered a case to investigate the case.
The police said that a total of six criminal cases such as robbery and chain snatching occurred in Madagish in the past few years at the Nemili, Arakkonan and Takulam police stations. The body was sent to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore town for a post-mortem examination. The investigation is ongoing.
