Toyota Urban Cruiser EV looks similar to Suzuki e Vitara, but has unique styling
Toyota has officially launched the production-spec Urban Cruiser EV, which will share important features with the Suzuki e Vitara. The Urban Cruiser EV will make its public debut at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show in January this year, providing a glimpse into Toyota’s future in the electric SUV market.
Design evolution and dimensions
The Urban Cruiser EV is based on the Suzuki eVX concept, which has undergone multiple design changes in the transition from concept to production. The final version adopts slightly more traditional proportions while retaining elements such as the slim lights and minimalist grille. The front bumper now sports a less angular design, with black plastic cladding on the sides, giving it a rugged SUV aesthetic. Rear styling elements include slim taillights, a roof spoiler and a strong bumper, which are very similar to those on the Suzuki e Vitara.
In terms of body size, the length, width and height of Urban Cruiser EV are 4285 mm, 1800 mm, and 1640 mm respectively, and the wheelbase is 2700 mm. These specifications make it slightly larger than the Suzuki e Vitara. Although the length is reduced by 15 mm and the width is reduced by 20 mm compared to the concept car, the Urban Cruiser is 20 mm taller. A turning radius of 5.2 meters ensures maneuverability in urban environments.
Batteries, motors and performance
The Urban Cruiser EV will be available with two battery options: a 49kWh battery and a 61kWh battery. The 49kWh version comes with a front-axle-mounted electric motor producing 144hp and 189Nm of torque, while the 61kWh version comes with a more powerful 174hp motor with the same torque output. The AWD version is dedicated to the larger battery and includes an additional 65 HP motor on the rear axle, bringing the total output to 184 HP and 300 Nm of torque.
To enhance its off-road capabilities, the all-wheel-drive version includes hill descent control and an “off-road mode” for handling rough terrain. Both battery options use lithium iron phosphate cells, underscoring Toyota’s focus on durable, high-efficiency energy storage.
Interior features and technologies
The Urban Cruiser EV’s cabin is similar to that of the Suzuki e Vitara, with a simple and practical design. Key highlights include a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features include electronic parking brake with automatic hold, wireless phone charging, single-zone climate control and driving modes.
Taller interiors will offer premium amenities such as a JBL audio system, a power driver’s seat and a sunroof. The rear seats feature sliding and reclining capabilities and a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration, providing enhanced flexibility.
Security and advanced features
Toyota has equipped the Urban Cruiser EV with a comprehensive safety suite. These include six airbags, a 360-degree camera and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that offers features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and a pre-collision system. These new additions underscore Toyota’s commitment to delivering a safe and technology-leading driving experience.
Release schedule and availability
Although Toyota has not revealed the exact timeline for the launch of the Urban Cruiser EV in India, it is expected to be launched by the end of 2025. Pricing details for the UK market will be announced in the third quarter of 2025.
