Toyota electric cars will start production next year with a driving range of more than 400 kilometers

Toyota has announced plans to launch a new electric SUV in 2025 using a partnership with Suzuki. The upcoming electric SUV is modeled on the Maruti Suzuki eVX and will be produced at Suzuki’s Gujarat manufacturing plant starting next spring (March-May). The model is the first shared-battery electric vehicle launched by Toyota and Suzuki, marking significant progress in their ongoing global partnership.

A global electric SUV based on collaboration

The vehicle will be based on the dedicated architecture 27PL electric skateboard platform jointly developed by Toyota, Suzuki and Daihatsu. The platform offers flexibility and scalability, and both manufacturers are optimistic about its potential to adapt to a variety of models. Toyota hopes the new electric vehicle will meet domestic and international market demand, thereby strengthening its role in the world’s expanding electrification drive.

Technology highlights and 4WD options

While detailed specifications are yet to be confirmed, Toyota has revealed that the upcoming SUV will include a 4WD option, expected to provide versatility for different driving needs. Following the Maruti Suzuki eVX, the SUV is expected to come with two battery pack options. The larger of the two battery packs is expected to provide a driving range of more than 400 kilometers, although exact figures and configurations may vary between the two brands.

Size, shape and design impact

At the concept stage, the Toyota Urban SUV measured 4,300 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width and 1,620 mm in height, almost the same dimensions as the Maruti eVX, which was 20 mm shorter in both width and height. The wheelbase of both cars is 2700 mm, ensuring similar silhouettes and interior space.

The production model is expected to retain many of the design cues of the urban SUV concept, including its upright stance and rugged appeal, enhanced by edgy surface elements and unique C-shaped LED lights. The Toyota and Maruti versions are likely to share exterior panels and interior components, although the Toyota version is expected to display styling inspired by the brand’s bZ series of electric vehicles.

Release schedule and market positioning

The production version of Toyota’s SUV is expected to debut after the launch of Maruti eVX, which is slated to be launched in the first quarter of 2025. Another option in the growing midsize electric vehicle segment.

This partnership is an important milestone for Toyota and Suzuki, combining their strengths to support the growing demand for electric vehicles in India and beyond. Both brands remain committed to providing consumers with new technologies and options while adapting to the ever-changing automotive landscape.
