Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin was unveiled on Monday (10 March 2025) at the Rs 5,150 crore manufacturing plant in Godrej Consumer Products Limited in Thiruporurur Taluk near Chennai.

On August 10, 2023, the Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL). In 2024, the company held a groundbreaking ceremony, investing Rs 5.15 crore over the next five years. The plant has created over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in various functions.

This is the company’s largest investment to increase its production capacity. The 27-acre plant is built in a record 13 months.

Mr. Stalin opened the plant in front of Nadir Godrej, Chairman of Godrej Industries Group and Sudhir Sitapati, MD and CEO of Godrej Consumer Products Limited.

The factory officially started operations through Mr. Stalin’s ritual activation of the production line, which marked the occasion by overseeing the first production operation, thus launching the first Cinthol Original Soap.

‘A key market in Tamil Nadu’

Mr Stalin said at the event that the facility demonstrates the trust of the Godriy Group in Tamil Nadu. “Tamil Nadu is a key market for fast-moving consumer products as many companies build foundations here. Tamil Nadu is a favorite destination for investors. By 2030, we are working to achieve a $1 trillion economy,” he said.

The Chief Minister added that by choosing Tamil Nadu as the basis for its facilities, Godrigi not only contributed to the country’s economic development, but also strengthened “our commitment to fostering industries that drive innovation, create jobs and enhance communities”. He assured the industry support.

Tamil Nadu Minister of Industry, Investment Promotion and Commerce TRB Rajaa said the plant is a smart manufacturing plant that is consistent with the advanced manufacturing push in Tamil Nadu.

Women, LGBTQIA+, PWD Workforce

The facility plans to employ 50% of women and 5% of employees from the LGBTQIA+ community and people with disabilities. Rajaa said the commitment coincides with Tamil Nadu’s vision of inclusiveness and equitable industrial growth.

“This cutting-edge facility not only supports our mission to deliver high-quality products to consumers, but also places a strong emphasis on the well-being and diversity of our workforce. “With 50% of women and people with disabilities (PWD) and 5% of the LGBTQIA+ community represented, we are proud of our ongoing commitment to promoting an inclusive and equitable environment.” ”

Mr Sudhir Sitapati said the Chengalpattu plant represents a transformative shift in the company’s manufacturing capacity and is the first fully integrated facility for Godrej Consumer Products under a roof.

The premium facility will produce products from our best-selling brands including Cinthol, Godrej No. 1, Goodknight, Godrej Aer and Godrej Expert Hair Color. He said that once all planned production lines are fully operational, we foresee a turnover of Rs 15 billion at the plant.
