After Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement on Wednesday, his father made a big statement. Ashwin’s father said they were also surprised when Ashwin decided to retire as they wanted him to continue playing for the Indian team.
Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ashwin’s decision to retire came as a shock to everyone shortly after the third Test between India and Australia concluded in Brisbane on Wednesday. Ashwin arrived in Chennai on Thursday morning.
“In fact, I only found out about it (his retirement) at the last minute,” Ravichandran told News18.
“It was his wish and wish to retire and I cannot interfere, but there could be many reasons for the way he retired. Only Ashwin knows about it and maybe it was humiliating,” he added.
“Without a doubt, because he has been playing on the court for 14-15 years. The sudden change, retirement, gave us a big shock.”
“At the same time, we expected this because the humiliation was happening. How long can he endure all this? Maybe, he will decide for himself,” he said.
Team India decided to select Washington Sundar over R Ashwin for the first Test of the series in Perth. Ashwin later returned to the Indian team in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. But then again, Ashwin was asked to sit on the bench for the third Test in Brisbane and Ravindra Jadeja took his place in the XI.
“I don’t know what was going on in his mind. He just announced the news. I accepted it happily. I didn’t feel anything about it. But the way he retired, I was very moved.” One side is happy and the other side is not happy because he should continue,” Ashwin’s father added.
