A statue of 19th-century social reformer Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar at the Government Degree College Kamalpur in Bundalai district of Tripura was destroyed by unidentified Gangsters blasphemed.
College authorities said the vandalism to the statue likely occurred on Tuesday, but they only became aware of it on Wednesday.
“We noticed that some unidentified persons broke through the barricades and desecrated the statue of Pandit Vidyasagar. We condemn this act. We have informed the police about the matter. A police team also rushed to the spot.
Desecration of statues is not new to Tripura as the state has witnessed several such incidents in the past.
In June, unidentified miscreants vandalized the statue of renowned poet and litterateur Himadri Nandan Deb at Kailasahar in Unakoti district. In 2018, BJP workers bulldozed a statue of communist icon Vladimir Lenin in Bellonia, South Tripura.
