Shahjahanpur: Six family members were killed and four others seriously injured when a car rammed into a truck in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district, police said on Thursday.

“The accident occurred near the Barkheda Jaipal intersection on the Bareilly-Etawah highway when a family traveling to Delhi in their Ertiga car collided with an oncoming truck late on Wednesday night,” Superintendent of Police Rajesh S said.

The deceased were identified as Riyazul Ali (45), Amna (42), Gudiya (9), Tamanna ‘Anu’ (32) and Noor (6). Gurfi Shah (25) later succumbed to his injuries at a government hospital.

Police said Riyazur was a resident of Khand Town in Shahjahanpur and was involved in the garment business in Delhi.

“The family had left for Delhi around 10 pm on Wednesday after attending a wedding. Soon thereafter, their vehicle was involved in a fatal collision,” the SP said.

Chief Medical Superintendent of Government Medical College Dr Nepal Singh said that five seriously injured persons were brought here, among whom Gurfi Shah (25) died during treatment.

Apart from this, a critically injured patient was referred to Bareilly. Two of the three patients admitted here are still in serious condition.

Police said they detained the driver of the truck and impounded the vehicle.

Riyazul’s uncle Shamsher Ali said at the hospital, “The family came to Shahjahanpur two days ago to attend a wedding and they were returning to Delhi when the tragedy happened.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

In his statement, he directed district officials to ensure that the injured received proper treatment and prayed for their speedy recovery.
