The representation of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the central government’s workforce is within prescribed limits, the Union House was informed on Thursday.
The Union Minister of State said that as per information provided by various ministries, the number of employees of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) as on January 1, 2024 was 5.47 lakh, 2.82 lakh and 8.55 lakh respectively. Officer Jitendra Singh said in a written reply.
“The representation of SCs and STs is within the prescribed limits of 15% and 7.5% respectively. The share of OBCs in direct recruitment has also remained above 27% in the past 10 years.
To a query on the reasons for deletion of federal government jobs and job reservation data from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) annual report (2023-24), Singh said that obtaining data/information from various ministries/departments is a time-consuming process.
“While finalizing the annual report, the relevant data received from various ministries/departments was incomplete and needed to be reconciled. Therefore, the content could not be included in the DoPT Annual Report (2023-24). The data has since been reconciled,” the Minister explain.

Replying to a question on the total number of vacancies and vacancies in the central government, he said the emergence and filling of vacancies in various ministries/departments is a continuous process.
“Information/details of vacancies are maintained by the respective ministries/departments. Central government ministries are directed from time to time to fill up the vacant posts within a time-limited time limit.
He said that the vacant positions have been filled through the “Rozgar Mela” launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 22, 2022.
“The 13th edition of Rozgar Melas has been held at central level in 45-50 cities across states/Union Territories. The Minister said that lakhs of appointment letters have been distributed during Rozgar Melas.
