Renault Bigster builds 7-seater version based on new generation Duster

Ahead of its debut at the Paris Motor Show, Renault’s budget brand Dacia has unveiled the Bigster, a large SUV based on the new-generation Renault Duster. The Bigster is positioned as the largest Dacia model yet and is expected to enter India as a Renault product. The SUV will have seven seats.

Dimensions and design highlights

The Bigster stands out for its size, being approximately 230 mm longer than the Duster and with a 43 mm longer wheelbase. Overall, the dimensions of Bigster are 4.57 meters long, 1.81 meters wide, 1.71 meters high, and the wheelbase is 2.7 meters. These enhancements give the vehicle a spacious cabin and a more commanding appearance.

Design elements from the 2021 Bigster concept carry over to the production model, including a striking gloss black grille that prominently displays the Dacia logo. The SUV retains a tall hood to optimize the driver’s line of sight, while the LED headlights and taillights adopt Dacia’s signature Y-shaped light design. Thick plastic cladding on the sides and thick bumpers further emphasize the rugged character of the vehicle, while 220mm of ground clearance provides an off-road-ready stance. International models come with 17 to 19-inch alloy wheels.

Interior and features

Although there has been speculation that the Bigster will be a seven-seater model, the model revealed so far is a five-seater model with a boot capacity of 667 liters. The interior layout is similar to the Duster, with a choice of 7-inch or 10-inch digital instrument panel, 10.1-inch infotainment touch screen and Y-shaped pattern on the air vents. Notable features include a power tailgate, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, advanced Arkamys sound system and a power driver’s seat. Higher interior trims can also offer ADAS.

Powertrain options

The Bigster will be available with three powertrain options: full-hybrid, mild-hybrid petrol and LPG-powered engines. The hybrid version features a 107-hp, 1.2-liter gasoline engine that combines with two electric motors to produce an additional 50 hp, for a total power output of 155 hp. This version has a 4-speed automatic gearbox for the petrol engine and a 2-speed gearbox for the electric motor driving the front wheels.

The mild hybrid model is equipped with a 140-horsepower, 1.2-liter turbo gasoline engine and a 48V hybrid system, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but an all-wheel-drive system is optional, offering modes such as Snow, Mud/Sand, Off-Road and Hill Control.

An LPG-powered version of the Bigster will also be available, powered by the same 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology. The model is capable of running on LPG and gasoline, and the combined fuel tank capacity allows a range of up to 1,450 kilometers after a single refueling.

Indian market and launch schedule

In India, the Bigster is expected to be launched six months after the Renault Duster, which is slated to be launched in the second half of 2025. It competes with rivals like Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari.

Renault’s sister brand Nissan will also launch its own versions of the Duster and Bigster, but these are expected to be launched after the Renault model.
