New Delhi: Production of some of the country’s major minerals continues to demonstrate strong growth after the country reached a record 2023-24 production level in fiscal 2024-25, according to an official statement issued Thursday. Iron ore production accounts for 70% of India’s total mineral production and hit 274 million tons (MMT) in fiscal 2023-24, showing further growth in the current fiscal year.
According to interim data, iron ore production has increased from 228 MMT in fiscal year 2023-24 (April to January) to 236 MMT in fiscal year 2024-25 (April to January), showing a healthy 3.5% increase, the statement said. Manganese ore production rose 11.1% in the 2024-25 fiscal year (April to January), up from 2.7 mMT in the corresponding period of the previous year, while chromite production rose from 2.3 mmt to 2.5 mmt during this period.
In addition, bauxite production also increased by 5.6% from 19.5 mmt in the same period last year to 20.6 MMT in the 2024-25 fiscal year (April to January). In the non-productive metals industry, raw aluminum production in fiscal year 2024-25 (April to January) increased by 1.2% over the corresponding period last year, increasing to 34.67 LT in 2024-25 (April to January), from 34.67 LT to 34.67 LT. During the same comparison period, refined copper yield increased from 4.19 LT to 4.50 lt.
India is the second largest aluminum producer, the top ten producer of refined copper, and the fourth largest iron ore producer in the world. “In the current fiscal year, the continued growth in production of iron ore production reflects strong demand conditions in the steel industry, which is used as a raw material. Coupled with the growth of aluminum and copper, these growth trends point to the continued strong economic activity in the user sector, such as energy, infrastructure, construction, automation and machinery,” the statement added. ”
