Abdullah Ocalan, the incarcerated leader of Kurdish separatist Kurdish residents, called on his movement to put down his arms and disband.
His remarks read in a letter from a professional Kurdish party from MPs, aiming to end the forty years of armed struggle in southeast Turkey, in which thousands of people were killed.
Ocalan, 75, had met MPs for several hours earlier in Imrali on an island in Imrali, and had been imprisoned in southwestern Istanbul since 1999.
His announcement comes as a supranational leader Devlet Bahceli, a member of the Turkish government, launched an initiative to end the conflict.
“There is no choice in pursuing and realizing a political system,” Okaran’s letter read. “Democratic consensus is the basic way.”
Ocalan attracts members of the PKK – Kurdistan Workers’ Movement – “All groups must place their arms, and PKK must dissolve”.
He said the movement – in Türkiye, Britain and the United States were banned as terrorist organizations – was mainly because “the channels for democratic politics have been closed.”
However, Devlet Bahceli, under the positive signal from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other political parties, put down his weapons for the Workers’ Party of Kurdish (PKK).
Bahceli has been carrying out tough military operations against the Workers’ Kurdish Kurdish Party (PKK) for years, but in October he shook hands with colleagues with MPs from the Pro-kurdish Dem party, causing colleagues to shake hands in parliament, and then suggested that if he quit violence and disbanded his armed group, Okaran could be paroled.
About 40,000 people have died since PKK picked up the weapon. Starting from 2015-17, violent surges occurred in southeastern Türkiye, when a two-and-a-half-year ceasefire collapsed.
