Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday accused Alphabet’s YouTube of slowing down the Russian video hosting platform and said Google must comply with Russian laws if it wants to continue operating in Russia.
Critics believe authorities deliberately disrupted YouTube to prevent Russians from viewing content critical of Putin and his government.
Russia denies the claims, saying the problems were caused by Google’s failure to upgrade its equipment – a charge the company and technology experts dispute.
Russia’s Internet surveillance service reported that the online video hosting service has experienced large-scale outages in the past few months, but communications regulator Roskomnadzor denied blocking YouTube traffic.
