It is understood that Peter Manderson is expected to become the next British Ambassador to the United States, according to multiple reports.
Lord Mandelson, who served in the cabinets of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, will become Britain’s next top diplomat in Washington as US President-elect Donald Trump returns to office.
A senior government source said one school of thought in Whitehall was that a former politician might be the best choice, given how anti-bureaucratic Trump is.
The new U.S. ambassador will succeed Karen Pierce, who has served since 2020. It is understood Pearce is keen to stay in the job for as long as possible.
In November, Manderson told the BBC he was “very interested” in providing trade advice to whoever gets the job. The Labor tycoon told BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that he would “prefer a new relationship with the United States rather than a special relationship”.
The US ambassador’s role will be a crucial one as the UK deals with the Trump administration, which threatens to introduce protectionist trade policies.
