New Delhi: The government appointed Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission of India (SEBI) on Thursday. Pandey, an 1987 batch of Indian Administrative Services (IAS) official for Odisha Cadre, will take over as Madhabi Puri Buch, whose three-year term ends on February 28.
The Ministry of Finance invited the application for the chief position of SEBI and held its due date on February 17. With Buch’s direct senior Ajay Tyagi and British Sinha were awarded the extended conditions, and Buch will resign at the end of his term.

Pandey brings decades of financial and administrative experience. He holds a Master of Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh and an MBA from the University of Birmingham, UK.
Before being appointed chairman of SEBI, Pandey served as Secretary of the Taxation Bureau of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Finance and the Minister of Finance. He also leads several key departments, including the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), and the Department of Personnel and Training.
His career includes important roles in the Union Government and the Odisha Government, as well as tenure at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He previously served in the positions of the Programme Committee (now Niti Aayog), the Joint Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat and the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce.
At the state level, Pandy serves as the head of the health, finance, transportation and commercial tax department in Odisha. He has also held leadership positions at Odisha State Finance Company and Odisha Small Industrial Company.
