The government moved to strengthen a joint parliamentary committee that will examine two bills proposing simultaneous elections to increase the number of MPs from 31 to 39, allowing more parties to be represented.

The list of Lok Sabha MPs proposed by the government now includes one member each from the Shiv Sena (UBT), CPI(M) and Lok Sabha (Ram Vilas), besides two members of the BJP and a Sanjewadi Party party.
The agenda of the House on Friday (December 20) includes a motion moved by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to refer the two bills to a joint committee including 27 members from the House of Commons and 12 members from the House of Federation.
New Lok Sabha MPs who have proposed joining the committee include Baijayant Panda and Sanjay Jaiswal of the BJP, Chhotelal of the SP, Anil Desai of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Shambhavi of the LJP and K Radhakrishnan of the Communist Party of India (M).
The committee will review two “One Nation, One Election” (ONOE) bills, including one to amend the constitution.
The Lok Sabha members who have proposed joining the panel include former Union ministers Anurag Thakur and PP Chaudhary, as well as the BJP’s Bhartruhari Mahtab and the Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Among the Lok Sabha members, 17 are from the National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, and 12 of them are from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
