The Iron Age pillar discovered in Kamasanpalli village of Nagarkurnool district, known locally as ‘Niluvu Rayi’, is facing neglect.
The stele was found in farmland near the Dindi River and is believed to have been erected around 1500 BC, possibly to commemorate the death of an important figure and highlight ancient funerary customs.
Archaeologist E. Sivanagireddy, CEO of Pleach India Foundation, visited the site on Thursday and expressed concern over the condition of the stele. The granite structure, which is 8 feet high, 2.5 feet wide and 1.5 feet in circumference, slopes to the east and is in danger of being destroyed due to ongoing agricultural activities.
Local farmers revealed that several Iron Age burial sites marked by round boulders had been cleared during land reclamation in the area.
