Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday (December 19, 2024) banned parliamentarians and political parties from holding demonstrations at any gate of the Parliament after political protests turned ugly, sources said.
“Lod Sabha Speaker Om Birla has issued strict instructions that no political party, parliamentarian or member group shall hold any dharmas and demonstrations at the gates of the Parliament building,” sources in the Assembly said.
The directive came on a day when the Bharatiya Janata Party-led New Democratic Alliance and the Congress-led India Bloc staged rival protests at the Parliament complex over an alleged insult to BR Ambedkar. The protest soon turned into shoving and scuffles, leading to Two MPs were injured and a woman MP claimed to have been intimidated by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.
