Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said that Indian Premier League (IPL) founder Lalit Modi applied for an Indian passport to the London High Commission for India.
A MEA spokesman said that in response to developments in difficult cases between the two countries, India knew that Mr. Modi had been wanted for tax evasion and Indian tax evasion and embezzlement cases and he had obtained citizenship in Vanuatu.
More than a decade after India demanded extradition, Mr. Modi continued to live in London. Mr Jaiswal said Mr Modi has now applied for surrender of his Indian passport.

“We continue to file lawsuits against him as required by law,” he added. India raised questions from Mr. Modi and other declared fugitives, including Vijay Mallya, during consultations between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the UK Foreign Ministry.
Vanuatu is a South Pacific country. According to a report, Vanuatu sells citizenship for about $150,000.
