The Karnataka Congress passed a larger Bengaluru Governance Bill on Monday. The bill was introduced by Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar, which holds the Bengaluru development portfolio.
“We want power and administration to be decentralized. We are not destroying Bangalore as some opposition members say. Instead, we are strengthening it. We want to make Bangalore stronger.”
He added that a larger Bangalore Governance Act was proposed to give Bangalore a new direction.
The bill also faces significant opposition from the BJP in Karnataka Parliament.

Opposition leader R Ashoka disagreed with DK Shivakumar’s statement, saying the bill was an insult to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who wanted to strengthen local institutions.
R Ashoka claims Congress is paving the way for other local agencies to propose similar needs to split them into several departments.
“Split Bengaluru will not help us,” Ahsoka said.
In attending the discussion, Yelahanka BJP MLA SR Vishwanath said: “Why split when the chief commissioner has been running BBMP without an elected agency for the past years?
He also said that if the government is keen to form a larger Bengaluru it should be done after the demarcation of Lok Sabha and parliamentary constituencies.
“We will support you in strengthening the administration of the government, but don’t split Bengaluru,” Vishwanath said.
