England’s campaign in the championship trophy ended prematurely after their first two losses to Australia and Afghanistan.
Jos Buttler announced that he will resign as England’s white captain due to his disappointed withdrawal from the championship trophy. He shared the news on Friday, noting that he will lead the team for the last time in his upcoming match against South Africa in Karachi.
England’s campaign in the championship trophy ended prematurely after their first two losses to Australia and Afghanistan. Despite their best efforts, they still couldn’t advance to the next round. Prior to the game, the team held a training camp in India and they faced major challenges, winning only eight out of eight of the games under their new white ball coach, Brendon McCullum.
“I’m going to stand up like the English captain,” Butler said. “It was the right decision for me and the right decision for the team. Hopefully, the others who can come in with Buzz bring the team where they need it.”
“The overwhelming emotions are still sad and disappointed. I’m sure this will pass in time and I can re-enjoy my cricket, and [will] Also be able to reflect on the great honor of leading your country and all the special things that come with it. ”
Buttler took over as Eoin Morgan from Eoin Morgan in June 2022 and later that year won the T20 World Cup in Australia. However, England’s performance has dropped sharply since then. Buttler decided to resign after three consecutive disappointing ICC events (50 World Cup 2023, 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Championship Trophy).
Butler suggested he might resign after England lost to Afghanistan on Wednesday in a narrow eight-inning situation, their ninth loss in 10 white ball games this year. He mentioned the importance of evaluating all options and figuring out whether he is part of the problem or part of the solution.
“It’s obvious that this game will be important: from the result and my captain,” Butler said. “Two losses and exits [was] I used to have some hangovers. I just arrived at the end of the road for me and my captain and it was a shame and I felt sorry for it.
“With Brendon just recently in, I’m really happy to work closely with him and hope to be able to turn around quickly and push the team forward. However, it’s not that hard, so it feels like there’s a right time for me and the team to change.”
Buttler’s position as captain of England’s ODI team has been criticized for their poor performance and losses in the World Cup and subsequent matches. England won only three of nine group matches in the World Cup and lost 18 of the last 25 ODIs, including elimination from the championship trophy.
