IPL 2025: Harry Brook is banned from using IPL for 2 years? That’s why England cricketers may be in trouble | Cricket News

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will begin on March 22, but one of its main signings is England’s star batsman Harry Brook withdraws the game. This marks Brooke’s second straight year of opting out after being drafted at the auction, putting him in danger of a two-year ban on the prestigious T20 league.

Why is Harry Brook exiting IPL 2025?

Harry Brook, who was acquired by the Delhi capital for up to Rs 6.22 crore in IPL 2025 Mega Auction, citing the need to focus on his international commitments, which is the main reason for his withdrawal. The 26-year-old intermediate batsman said he needed time to prepare for what he called the busiest time in his cricket career.

Brooke apologized to the Delhi Capitals franchise and its supporters in a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram, regretting the last-minute decision. “I spent some time seriously considering this decision under the guidance of people I trust. It was a very important moment for England cricket and I wanted to be totally committed to preparing for the upcoming series.”

IPL rules and potential bans on Harry Brooke

Under IPL’s new player regulations in the 2025-27 cycle, any player who registers for auctions will then withdraw after being selected and will be held responsible for the two-year ban on participating in the match and future player auctions. However, the rule is exceptional to players who are excluded due to injury or medical conditions.

Brooke’s withdrawal does not fall under these waivers, which makes him a potential candidate for IPL’s 2026 and 2027 suspension. The Cricket Control Board of India (BCCI) has not yet made a formal announcement on its identity, but if they strictly enforce the rule, Brook could breach the IPL contract for the next two years.

Harry Brook’s IPL Fight and England Priorities

Brooke has a different history from IPL. In 2023, he signed Rs 13.25 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad but struggled to justify his price, scoring only 190 points in 11 matches. He then withdrew from the 2024 season due to personal reasons after his grandmother passed away.

With England cricket in a transitional stage, Brooke is widely regarded as the leading candidate to replace Jos Buttler as the next white team captain in the country. His decision to skip the IPL was taken at a critical moment as England prepares for the busy calendar, including a family test series for India and a high-risk ember tour in Australia.

Delhi Capital’s Big Setback Before IPL 2025

The Delhi capital has invested heavily in Brook, hoping that he can strengthen their middle order. His sudden evacuation left the team scrambling to replace it, which allowed their plans to undermine their plans weeks before the game began. This unexpected development adds to the challenge for Delhi as they aim to rebound from an unstoppable IPL 2024 campaign. Due to Brooke’s absence, team managers will have to reevaluate the batting options and may seek toward the strength on the bench or last-minute replacement.
