KOLKATA: IT major Infosys on Wednesday inaugurated a development center at a cost of Rs 426 crore in New Town near here.
The Infosys campus spread over 50 acres will have employment potential for 4,000 IT professionals.
“This is a New Year gift to West Bengal,” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said while inaugurating the development centre.
“This center by Infosys will help other IT companies come to West Bengal. West Bengal is the leading IT state in the country. There are nearly 2,200 IT companies in the state, including large companies like TCS, Wipro, IBM and Accenture .
The chief minister also said that this is a historic day for the state.
Banerjee said: “We wanted Infosys to come to the state and the company has fulfilled our dream.” The chief minister said that the new city will be built in New Silicon Valley covering an area of 200 acres with an investment of Rs 270 billion and is expected to create 75,000 jobs.
“Twenty-eight companies have already started working with the 11 data centers that will be built,” she said.
Banerjee said a cable landing station will soon be constructed in the state, which will help improve connectivity for IT companies.
The country also has policies related to data centers, broadband and artificial intelligence and machine learning, she said.
Banerjee, who is also Trinamool Congress president, directed local party MLA Shaukat Molla to work with Infosys authorities to help them run the Center “smoothly and peacefully”.
Infosys Chief Financial Officer Jayesh Sanghrajka said West Bengal has a huge talent pool and the Kolkata Development Center will create employment opportunities and technology ecosystem.
