Indian Technical College Hyderabad and Coal India Ltd. (CIL) signed a memorandum of understanding in a major development on Friday to establish a hub for clean energy and net zero (Cleanz).
The Centre received a grant of Rs 9.8 crore approved by CIL, “will focus on state-of-the-art research, technology development and skills for sustainable energy solutions.”

According to officials, the memorandum of understanding is part of the ministry’s emphasis on strengthening the industry’s research capabilities. The collaborative multiple research areas include enhanced coal seam methane/coal methane recovery, carbon capture technology and critical minerals, coal liquefaction, gasification and synthetic agent utilization, AI and ML applications in the energy sector, and circular economy and waste management.
Cleanz, located on IITH campus, will collaborate seamlessly through high bandwidth communications to connect with Ranchi’s National Center for Coal and Energy Research. The center will also provide training, research and development facilities, and provide shared prospects for students, faculty and professionals from both organizations.
Officials added that Cleanz is aligned with the country’s commitment to net zero emissions and sustainable energy development and strengthens industry partnerships in academia.
“The partnership with CIL marks an important step in the energy transition in India. Through this collaboration, we look forward to solutions that open up new eras to achieve clean energy and carbon neutrality,” said Mr Murty.
