Sam Konstas opens up about the challenge of facing Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming Boxing Day Test match between India and Australia Taking place on Thursday 26 December at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Konstas joined Usman Khawaja as Australia’s leading opener after Nathan McSweeney was dropped.

The 19-year-old Konstas earned his qualification with an impressive 97-ball 107 in a practice match against India in Canberra. In that innings, he stood in the middle of a strong attack from Indian bowlers like Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja Steady footing. However, one key figure is missing from the lineup – Jasprit Bumrah, who is Australia’s biggest problem this summer.

India’s pace spearhead Bumrah has cemented his status as the most lethal visiting bowler to Australia with 53 wickets in three matches at an average of 17.15. He also has the highest bowling average among Australian overseas players, with over 50 wickets.

While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Konstath is full of confidence but admitted that he won’t overburden himself with the scenes of “Bumrah”. The young Aussie batsman believes he will gain enough confidence for the Premier XI from his century against India.

“I don’t watch too much [of him]. I’ve met him many times. But I’m excited to challenge myself and face him. Typically, our analysts will give some feedback on each bowler. Maybe I might read it,” Constas said.

“I’m very confident. I’ve done all the hard work just to back up my skills. I thought it was just another game and trying to keep it simple. As a kid you always dream about that moment and this is Very rare to get your baggy green, so I would be very honored if I could join in,” he added.

The 19-year-old was informed of his selection by chief selector George Bailey, with skipper Pat Cummins subsequently confirming his debut in the Boxing Day Test.

“It’s all a bit unexpected, but I’m honored to be given this opportunity. I just had dinner with my family [to celebrate]quite cold. It was emotional, mom was crying…it all happened so fast,” Constas said.

“Mom, dad and my brothers, they’ve made all the sacrifices, taking me to practice, throwing me the ball, going through the highs and lows. Just giving something back to them is going to be very special. I can’t wait Let them come to Melbourne for support,” he added.

The series is currently tied at 1-1 after India managed a draw in the third Test match in Brisbane. The Boxing Day Test begins on December 26 at the MCG in Melbourne.
