Hyundai Motor India has announced the expansion of its partnership with Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited (ARE&M). Under the agreement, the carmaker will equip its domestic product line with AMARON’s Made-in-India AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery technology. It will be used as a starting, lighting and ignition (SLI) battery.
Hyundai Motor claims to be an Indian automaker and plans to equip its cars with locally made AGM batteries in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024-2025, such as Hyundai Creta, Verna and other models. The move is in line with HMIL’s efforts towards localization and introducing locally sourced innovative technologies to Indian customers.

Hyundai claims that in rigorous real-world durability tests, the Indian-made Amaron AGM batteries performed approximately 150% better than conventional CMF (Completely Maintenance Free) batteries. AGM batteries have a wider operating temperature and longer life and are said to be suitable for Indian driving conditions.
Advantages of AGM batteries
The Amara Raja AGM battery is said to feature fast charging, long service life, low self-discharge rate, minimal maintenance and high power efficiency, making it suitable for vehicles equipped with ISG (idle speed start) system. The batteries are said to provide smoother starts and better energy efficiency for the higher electrical loads of modern cars.
Hyundai claims the batteries have been extensively tested at its global R&D center in Namyang, South Korea. This validates Amara Raja’s Made-in-India AGM batteries, ensuring compliance with Indian emission standards.

The automaker said localization efforts not only support local job creation and economic growth, but also reduce costs and reduce its carbon footprint by eliminating dependence on imports. Additionally, indigenously manufactured AGM batteries will enable HMIL to launch next-generation products tailored for the Indian market, improving range, performance and reducing emissions.
HMIL claims to be continuously strengthening its localization efforts through its dedicated localization team, working closely with over 194 suppliers for over 1,238 parts and trims at its manufacturing facility in Chennai, as well as for its upcoming The factory being built in Talegaon, Maharashtra, adopts a focused localization strategy.
