Mark Carney will be sworn in as Canada’s next prime minister in the next few days, winning the game to succeed Justin Trudeau.
This means he will lead Canada’s Liberal Party in the next election – expected to be called soon.
Several political leaders called for a vote after Trudeau announced that he resigned as Liberal leader in January.
But a trade war could spark after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed huge tariffs on the country, and opposition parties suggested Canada should vote as soon as possible.
When will the Canadian federal election be held?
By law, the maximum time between Canadian federal elections is five years. The next vote will be officially scheduled for 2025 on October 20, 2025.
However, there are several scenarios that can trigger early elections:
- When the Governor accepts the advice of the General to interpret the government, or
- If the Governor accepts the Prime Minister’s resignation after the government is defeated in the Parliament’s vote of confidence
When Trudeau resigned in January, he suspended parliament so that the Liberal Party, which currently controls the government, could conduct a leadership contest to find his replacement.
Carney announced on Sunday as Trudeau’s backup, and he could call the election early.
Pierre Poilievre, who leads the opposition Conservative Party, has said he will call for distrust once parliament returns, as does New Democratic leader Jagmeet Singh.
Who can serve as prime minister?
In Canadian federal elections – Like the British elections, voters will not vote directly with the Prime Minister. Instead, most members of parliament (MPs) become leaders of PM.
This means Carney will compete with Poilievre and Singh.
What are the main political parties operating?
Four major parties will compete with the next elections – the Liberals, the Conservatives, the New Democratic Party (NDP) and Quebec.
The Liberal Party has been in power since Trudeau’s vote in 2015. They currently have 153 seats.
The conservatives are the official opposition with 120 seats.
Quebec only holds candidates in Quebec, with 33 seats, while the New Democrats have 24 seats.
The Greens have two seats.
In the late stages of Trudeau’s Premier League, the polls have always shown a strong lead to the conservatives.
But the numbers tightened after Trudeau stepped down. Trump has since taken office in the United States and put in huge tariffs on Canada, which has raised expectations for voting.
How does Canadian federal election work?
There were 343 federal rides – also known as constituency or electoral districts – that occupied the country. Everyone has corresponding seats in the House of Commons.
All seats in the House of Commons, the House of Commons, can be snapped up during the election.
Members of the Senate were appointed to the House of Lords and did not run for election.
Like the UK, Canada also has a “innate” electoral system.
The candidate who wins the most votes on each ride will win that seat and become a member of Congress. They don’t need to get a majority of all votes in their area. Other parties have gained nothing in this field.
The party leaders with the largest number of elected members of Congress will usually form the government. The second party usually forms a formal opposition.
If no party ends up with a majority – the result is called an open parliament or minority government. In fact, this means that the party will not be able to pass legislation without the help of other parties.
Who can vote?
To vote in the Canadian election, someone must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, and have proof of identity and address.
