Srinagar, J&K: There is a fresh heavy snow in the mountains of the Kashmir Plain, and continuous rainfall has ended the long-term drying spell, bringing much-needed relief to residents. Precipitation significantly improves drainage of rivers, streams and springs, thus alleviating concerns about shortages of irrigation and daily use.
The higher rivers, including Gurmag, Sonamag, Zogira Pass, Guris, Sindan Top, fellow ki Gali and Kupwara, have fresh accumulations in many areas ranging from two to three feet. Meanwhile, heavy rains slammed the lower area, soaking the valley and replenishing water.
Authorities have issued a yellow alert in Kashmir warning of possible avalanches and landslides on upstream and major highways. Due to the heavy snow accumulation, key routes such as Mughal Road, Zojila Pass and Sinthan Pass have been closed for vehicle movement.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts moderate snowfall and rainfall in parts of Jamu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours. It is expected that the intensity is highest in some areas of southern Kashmir and Jamu.
