The Calcutta High Court on Friday (December 20, 2024) allowed a doctors’ group to hold demonstrations from December 20 to 26, urging speedy justice for the doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who were allegedly involved in the Raped and murdered.
The court, however, directed the Doctors United Forum to hold the protest 50 feet away from Dorina intersection at the Esplanade in central Kolkata as it would cause traffic congestion in the busy area.
The doctors’ group proposed an all-day sit-in at Dolina Crossing, a busy intersection in the city centre.
Justice Titankar Ghosh, while passing the order, said since the organizers were doctors, they would consider whether there would be any difficulty in commuting in the area during the demonstrations.
Lawyers representing the West Bengal government have opposed holding demonstrations at the proposed site at Dolina junction, claiming it would lead to traffic congestion in the area.
During the petition hearing, Justice Ghosh noted that while the government allowed some organizations to host programs at the site, it did not allow others.
He said the administration should not have double standards and the state could introduce notifications banning all projects in certain areas.
The court directed that the stage where demonstrations are held should not exceed 40 feet in length and 23 feet in width, and the number of sit-ins should not exceed 250 people at a time.
Justice Ghosh directed the government to make adequate arrangements to avoid any untoward incident.
Organizers are required not to make any inflammatory remarks or cause disorder during the demonstration.
The court also directed the police to submit a compliance report to it on January 13.
On August 9, the body of a working postgraduate student was found in the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed charges against the main accused Sanjay Roy.
Roy, a citizen volunteer with the local police, allegedly committed the crime on August 9 when the victim was sleeping in the seminar room of the hospital, the central probe agency said in its chargesheet filed before the CBI special court. one time.
