In controversy over the Gurmag fashion show held during Ramzan, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday (10 March 2025) in Ramzan, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, his government will not allow such an event for any month of the year.

Many people were called “obscene” by many and sparked protests at the conference.

“We have ordered an investigation into this, but preliminary facts show that it is a private four-day event organized by a private gathering in a private hotel. The show was held on March 7 and something surfaced, which hurts the emotions of people who are not wrong,” the chief minister told parliament.

After the question hour, the Chief Minister said that the members’ “disappointment and attention” were real.

Kashmir’s chief pastor Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said on Sunday that it was obscene in the name of tourism promotions.

“Thrilling! In the holy month of Ramzan, an obscene fashion show was organized in #Gulmarg, pictures and videos that spread the shock and anger among people.

“How can it tolerate it in a valley famous for its Sophie, the Bible and the deep religious views of the people,” Mirwaz said in an article on his X-handle.

The Chief Minister responded to the post, “Shock and anger are totally understandable. The images I saw completely ignore local sensitivity, as well as this holy month.

“My office is in contact with local authorities and I request that the report be submitted within the next 24 hours. This report will follow further actions of the report,” Mr. Abdullah wrote in a post on X.

In Parliament, the Chief Minister said that the people who organize fashion shows have not yet applied their ideas, ignored public sentiment, and did not pay attention to where they organize and when.

“Some people say that in Ramzan month, this kind of performance shouldn’t happen. After what I saw, I don’t think it should be done at any time of the year,” said Mr. Abdullah.

The chief minister said he wanted to make it clear that the government had no role in organizing the incident.

“It is a private party, organized in a private hotel and distributed invitations privately. No permission was sought from the government, no money was collected from the government, no government infrastructure was used, and no government officials were present in this incident.

Mr Abdullah said: “Nevertheless, the Government was asked whether to point out violations of the law and hand over the case to the police to conduct the investigation.”

He said that if the government will be granted permission, the permit for such activities will not be allowed. “If the law is violated, strict action will be taken.”
