GitHub launches free version of Copilot for VS Code

GitHub has announced the launch of a free version of its AI coding assistant Copilot, which will be integrated directly into Microsoft’s Visual Studio (VS) code editor. As of now, the monthly fee for developers is $10, and access is free for newly verified students and teachers.

GitHub Copilot Free will provide users with 2,000 code completions and 50 chat messages per month.

The AI ​​matching programmer is powered by Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI’s GPT-4o. But paying subscribers will have access to advanced models such as Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro and OpenAI’s o1-preview.

The platform has historically offered free repositories, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) minutes, and Codespaces to developers. With Copilot Free, another layer of products is added, such as multi-file editing, terminal assistance to make suggestions and correct errors in your code, listening to voice commands, and project context awareness, where Copilot understands the entire code base and helps accordingly.

GitHub is also developing Vision Copilot, which developers can use to generate user interfaces from screenshots and streamline the design-to-code workflow.

After users log in to their GitHub account, they can use the free plan in VS Code and GitHub.
