The forest department will conduct a synchronized wetland bird census on March 8 and 9.
Prior to the exercise, directions will be provided to department personnel and volunteers, which will cover wetlands in each area. Wetlands to be covered for census have been identified. Forest department officials said a separate group consisting of forest department personnel, volunteers, observers and enthusiasts will be deployed to perform drills dedicated to each team’s wetlands.
Methods for conducting census, methods for observing birds, and species identification will all be introduced to the team before conducting detailed exercises. The Kalawiti Bird Sanctuary in the Ariyal region, designated last year as the Ramsar site, is a famous wetland in the central region that will be covered in this exercise.
The sanctuary covers an area of 453.7 hectares and is an important breeding and foraging site for water bird species. It is one of the important bird and biodiversity regions in Tamil Nadu.
In the Perambalur area, the team will cover about 20 tanks for a census. The fleet equipped with binoculars and other equipment will start practicing around 5.30 a.m., officials said, which will last for several hours. Officials added that the terrestrial bird census 2025 will be conducted across the state from March 15 to 16.
