In the second leg of the visit between the two countries, Foreign Minister Jaishankar arrived in Singapore on Friday (November 8, 2024) and met with Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and discussed with him how to take measures to advance the contemporary bilateral partnership, focusing on areas such as industrial parks, innovation and semiconductors.

He said the two leaders “discussed advancing contemporary partnerships, focusing on industrial parks, green energy, skills, innovation and semiconductors”.
Mr. Jaishankar will also deliver a speech at the 8th ASEAN-India Think Tank Online Roundtable. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) consists of Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
India’s relationship with ASEAN has been strengthened and multifaceted, as reflected through the Look East Policy. EAM will also meet with Singaporean leaders to review the close partnership between the two countries and explore ways to further strengthen bilateral relations. India and Singapore share close bilateral relations. Since the implementation of the “Look East Policy” in the early 1990s, Singapore has played an important role in re-establishing ties between India and Southeast Asian countries.
The Indian community occupies an important position in Singapore, accounting for approximately 9.2% of the country’s total population. Mr Jaishankar’s visit comes after Singapore’s Defense Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen’s three-day state visit to India.
During the visit, he co-chaired the sixth India-Singapore Defense Ministers Dialogue in New Delhi with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Singapore has been an indispensable partner in Indiaโs Look East Policy.
Singapore’s Defense Minister Heng expressed confidence in the relationship between the two countries, saying: “From Singapore’s perspective, India has always been part of the East. No matter how you choose to act or how you look, we consider you to be part of this region.”
Jaishankar is visiting two countries, Australia and Singapore. The interaction on the Australian side lasted from November 3 to November 7. The Foreign Minister held meetings with all walks of life in Australia to strengthen the partnership between the two countries. Jaishankar’s visit to both countries will surely enhance the warm and friendly relations between India and the two countries.
