An “extensive” police operation is underway in an eastern German city after a driver plowed into a crowd at a Christmas market on Friday, officials said.
Agence France-Presse quoted local emergency services as saying that as many as 80 people were injured in the incident. It was unclear whether anyone was killed.

The incident occurred in Magdeburg, the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, west of Berlin.
New York City police have increased security at holiday markets as a precaution and in response to incidents in Germany, a senior NYPD official told NBC News on Friday.
Additional resources will be sent to numerous holiday markets and high-profile locations across the city. The official said some overseas markets were threatened, but there was no specific local threat.
