Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks against Dr BR Ambedkar, calling it an “insult to democracy”. Addressing the Assembly, Shah said, “Chanting the name of God instead of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s name will bring salvation.”

Speaking to reporters near the Suvarna Assembly building in Belagavi, Shivakumar questioned the intention behind the remark. “Who else but Ambedkar and the Constitution could have laid the foundation for us? Ambedkar gave us the Constitution and it is our duty to pay tribute to him,” he said.

Shivakumar stressed the importance of principles like Basavanna’s “Kayaka Ve Kailasa” (work is worship) and urged a deeper discussion on what he said was an insult to Ambedkar and the Constitution.

The remarks sparked a political controversy, with the Karnataka Congress accusing the BJP of disrespecting the creator of India’s constitution.

Karnataka Rural Development Minister Priyank Kharge also joined the chorus of criticism, calling Shah’s statement “sheer arrogance”. He said, “His statement is very clear and it is on record. If one keeps chanting the name of God many times, you may not necessarily go to heaven, but if you believe in Ambedkar, you will definitely get society Justice. It is simply arrogant for the Interior Minister to speak in this way. It is the ideology of their organization that makes them say this.
