A young couple was allegedly robbed and attacked by “guards” at a popular tourist destination near Agartala on Thursday. This is the second such incident reported from the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary managed by the forest department.
The police launched an investigation after the victim reported the incident to Bishalgarh police station. The victim claimed he was physically assaulted by his attacker.
Forest department officials said their staff were unlikely to be involved. However, they are investigating the matter to uncover the truth. They believe a rowdy gang may have been responsible for the “very unfortunate incident”.
The young man said he and his girlfriend were sitting on a bench inside the shelter when three men approached them. The attacker claimed to be a forest guard, demanded four thousand rupees, grabbed his shirt and hit him on the face.
They also insulted the couple and demanded the money as the couple’s “expenses.” The victims had only three thousand rupees and handed it to the attackers to force them to leave.
The attackers also tried to steal the couple’s mobile phones, but failed. Police are yet to identify the perpetrators but said they are working with forest officials to arrest them.
