One of the greatest off-spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin, announced his retirement from the national team on Wednesday, December 18, and fans were divided. Many current and former cricketers took to social media to wish Ashwin and express their respect for him. Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif also joined the list and he also heaped praises on the Indian star’s sharp cricketing brain.
The player from Tamil Nadu called time on his career after the third Test between India and Australia ended in a draw. He played his last Test match for India in Adelaide, where he took figures of 1-53 in 18 overs and scored 29 runs with the bat.
“Ashwin, as a cricketer, maybe he doesn’t get the respect he deserves in the dressing room; I don’t know about that. He wants to know if he’s going to be in the starting XI. He’s No. 3 in the world. Bowler, taking 537 wickets for India is a huge achievement,” Latif told news agency IANS.
“Maybe he feels that his career may be nearing the end, especially when players like Washington Sundar are being favoured, so he may decide whether to play the Sydney Test, whether to play the Melbourne game. At some point, a guy It’s going to reach a boiling point. I’ve been there many times myself,” he added.
Talking about Ashwin’s statistics, he ended his international career with 537 wickets in 106 Tests at an average of 24 and became India’s second highest wicket taker after the legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble (619).
“But as a cricketer, as a talent in the game, there are many cricketers in India, but Ashwin is at a different level. His quality is at a different level. I am sure he can take over the BCCI or ICC in the future, Because he has this ability. He is so humble and you don’t even realize he is such a great cricketer. My best wishes to him from Pakistan.
“He has had a great career. Look at him; as a batsman, Ashwin has six centuries and Dhoni probably doesn’t even have that,” the former Pakistan player added.
