A protest was held in the city on Thursday to condemn Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks against BR Ambedkar, saying chanting Dr BR Ambedkar’s name has become a fashion in the Congress.
The group, led by former MP Somashekar, said the BJP leader had insulted not only the architect of India’s constitution but also his tens of millions of followers through such “derogatory remarks”.
Somashekhar said Shah’s statement betrayed not only the true mindset of the BJP towards Ambedkar but also of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the country. People including Amit Shah were enjoying the benefits of reservations because of the constitution bequeathed by Dr. Ambedkar and belittling him showed their low mentality.
Mr. Somashekhar said the Union Minister’s statement was not surprising considering the ideology of the BJP. Their defamatory remarks will be condemned by people across the country. He also came down hard on the BJP MPs who pounded the table in support of Shah’s remarks. The former MP said that without Dr Ambedkar, millions of people would have been trapped in the situation of “manuadis”, deprived of their dignity and rights.
Somashekhar also urged President Drupadi Murmu to intervene and advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Shah from the cabinet.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson HA Venkatesh, former mayor Narayan, TB Chikkaanna and other Congress leaders were present.
