Jammu and Kashmir News: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has vacated Budgam Assembly seat while retaining Ganderbal constituency, interim Speaker Mubarak Gul announced in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday. This is a major political move.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah managed to win both the Ganderbal and Badgam seats in the recent assembly elections, but his choice to retain Ganderbal underscores the importance of his legacy.

In the recently concluded Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, CM Abdullah won the Budgam assembly seat defeating Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP).

Abdullah family stronghold

The Ganderbal seat has long been considered a stronghold of the Abdullah family. Omar Abdullah served as Ganderbal MLA from 2009 to 2014 when he was the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah retains Ganderbal assembly seat and resigns from Budgam seat,” Mubarak Gul confirmed the change in parliament.

Impact of JK Congress on National Conference Strength

With Omar Abdullah resigning from Budgam, the National Conference’s presence in the 95-seat parliament has now been reduced to 41 seats. However, the party still maintains an absolute majority with the support of six Congress MLAs, five independent MLAs and one MLA each from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

As Omar Abdullah plays his role in Parliament, his focus remains on addressing the needs and concerns of his constituents, especially in Ganderbal, as he embarks on a new chapter in his political career.

Jammu and Kashmir Provincial Councilor takes oath

While serving as chief minister from 2009 to 2014, Omar Abdullah took courses to improve his speaking skills in Hindi, Urdu and Kashmiri. Omar Abdullah, son of Farooq Abdullah, was sworn in as MLA in Kashmir on Monday, October 21.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary took the oath in English.

The swearing-in ceremony of MLAs marks the end of a six-year legislative hiatus in Jammu and Kashmir.

JK demands restoration of statehood

On October 19, the Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet passed a resolution urging the Union government to restore statehood to the Union territory.

A cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution to restore status quo ante.

The cabinet has authorized Chief Minister Abdullah Abdullah to take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government to restore statehood.
