Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed the real purpose behind the company’s famous free meals policy, revealing it’s more than just a perk for employees. Speaking on Bloomberg’s David Rubinstein Show, Pichai explained that these communal meals foster collaboration and innovation, making them an integral part of Google’s culture (via NDTV).
According to the report, the Google CEO looked back on his early days at Google, where he started as a product manager in 2004, and he highlighted how casual conversations in company cafes often led to the exchange of creative ideas. “I remember a lot of times, I would meet someone at a meal and we would start talking and get excited about a new concept,” he recalls. He noted that a relaxed environment plays a crucial role in generating new ideas and fostering cross-team collaboration.
Pichai emphasized that the cost of providing free meals far outweighs its long-term benefits, as it helps build a stronger sense of community and encourages innovation. “The value of these interactions far outweighs the cost,” he said, positioning the measure as a strategic investment rather than an unnecessary indulgence.
In addition to meal policies, the US tech giant is known for offering a wide range of employee benefits, including comprehensive health insurance, flexible work arrangements and wellness programs. Pichai said these incentives make Google one of the most desirable places to work, with approximately 90 percent of job offers accepted by candidates.
However, some employee benefits at Google have been scaled back in recent years. In 2023, the tech giant announced plans to reduce the opening hours of some cafes and consolidate its micro-kitchens. Despite the changes, Pichai reiterated that Google’s benefits program remains one of the most competitive in the industry, prompting other companies to follow suit.
