Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit said Friday that an attacker gained control of the Ether wallet and transferred about $1.5 billion worth of stake to an unidentified address.
The CEO said in a post on X this week that the etheric wallet is the only currency to be attacked, and that the wallets on all other exchanges were not affected and the withdrawal was carried out normally.
“All customer funds are safe and our operations are as usual without any disruption,” the company said, adding that its security team, as well as forensic experts, are investigating the incident.
Bybit caters to more than 60 million users worldwide and provides access to a variety of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ether.
“Even if this hacker loss is not recovered, all customers’ assets are 1 to 1, and we can make up for the losses,” Zhou said.
