BMW is recalling nearly 700,000 vehicles in China due to a defective coolant pump, a new setback for the German automaker that has been troubled by other vehicle failures.
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement on Friday that BMW will recall 499,539 domestically produced cars and 188,371 imported cars starting from March 1, 2025. The agency said a faulty coolant pump plug installed on some models could cause corrosion or rust, which could lead to a short circuit and, in extreme cases, a fire.

Affected models include domestic 3 Series and 5 Series cars, as well as a number of imported X Series SUVs.
The recall follows a sharp drop in deliveries in China, its largest revenue market. The group said last week that shipments of BMW and Mini brand cars in China fell 30% in the third quarter, the largest decline in more than four years.

In September, BMW issued a profit warning due to a global recall of 1.5 million vehicles supplied by Continental Group with defective braking systems. The faults are expected to cost automakers nearly 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) to fix.
The fault was discovered in August and BMW alerted Chinese authorities during the investigation, a BMW spokesman said in a statement. The spokesperson added that the repair work would take approximately three hours and that European vehicles would not be affected. They could not immediately explain why the recall took until March.
