A Congress Assam leader said he was bitten by a policeman during a protest march in Guwahati on Friday (December 20, 2024).

Dozens of MPs marched on Wednesday to protest the death of advocate and party leader Mridul Islam, before scuffles broke out with police. He died of an illness caused by tear gas fired by police during the show “Raj Bhavan Chalo,” which was designed to raise a range of local and national issues.

Police have not responded to his accusation. Senior police officers did not respond to calls or messages.

The detained Congress leaders include the party’s national president Bhupan Kumar Bora. Youth Congress national president Uday Bhanu Chib was taken into “preventive detention” at the hotel where he was staying. Party members gathered outside the hotel said he was not allowed to go out for more than 16 hours.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out at the Congress for trying to create unrest in Guwahati.

“For the past few days, the Congress has been trying to create a situation where the police are forced to shoot. Two or three leaders of the Congress party are engaged in a competition to become a bigger leader and in this competition, they Blackmailed the people of Guwahati,” he told reporters.

“The agitation of political parties should be in the electoral box [EVMs]. them [Congress] Want to cause riots but we will not allow that to happen,” he said.
